Kenya's Silent Health Crisis
As of early 2026, cancer is the third leading cause of death in Kenya, following infectious and cardiovascular diseases. The country sees approximately 44,000–48,000 new cancer diagnoses annually, with over 32,000 deaths occurring each year. The five most prevalent forms of the disease are breast, cervical, prostate, esophageal, and colorectal cancers, with women disproportionately affected by higher incidence and mortality rates compared to men. Specifically, cervical cancer remains the second most common cancer among Kenyan women, accounting for an estimated 5,845 new cases and 3,600 deaths annually. A major clinical challenge is that more than 70% of cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, which leads to poorer prognoses, higher treatment costs, and increased pressure on families and the healthcare system.
